Books

Real-Time Stability in Power Systems. Techniques for Early Detection of the Risk of Blackout, Second Edition, Springer, 2014, New York, NY

This pioneering volume has been updated to reflect the state-of-the-art in blackout prediction and prevention. It: addresses the fundamentals and algorithms of successfully deployed real-time steady-state, transient and voltage stability techniques; documents industry accepted metrics and tools to quantify and monitor the distance to instability; describes stability applications of synchrophasors; and reviews additional topics, such as trajectory sensitivities. As such, this book remains the definitive resource for industry practitioners and academic researchers in this critical area of power system operations. Chapters include:

Power System Dynamic Equilibrium, Power Flow, and Steady-State Stability, Peter W. Sauer and M. A. Pai

Fast Computation of the Steady-State Stability Limit, Savu C. Savulescu (read more...)

Real-Time Stability Assessment in Modern Power System Control Centers, John Wiley and IEEE Press, 2009, New York, NY

This book provides practical, hands-on techniques for assessing power system stability in real-time and answers the need for a hands-on guide for assessing power system stability in real-time to support on-line decision making in system operations. The book is primarily geared toward the practical aspects of the subject, and is an excellent source for utility experts, consultants, researchers, professionals, and advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Chapters include:

Real-Time Stability in Power Systems. Techniques for Early Detection of the Risk of Blackout, Springer, 2006, Norwell MA

In the aftermath of the wave of blackouts that affected US, UK and mainland Europe utilities in 2003 and 2004, renewed attention has been focused on maintaining highest level of reliability and security in the operation of the power system. The lack of adequate transmission infrastructure as well as real-time tools aimed at detecting and alarming system conditions have also been highlighted. Chapters include:

Relationships between Power System Dynamic Equilibrium, Load-Flow, and Operating Point Stability, P. W. Sauer and M. A. Pai

Fast Assessment of the Distance to Instability, Savu C. Savulescu

Graphs, Digraphs and Electrical Networks. Applications to Operations Research, originally published in Portuguese language with the title Grafos, Dígrafos e Redes Elétricas. Aplicações na Pesquisa Operacional by the Editora IBEC, 1981, São Paulo, S.P., Brazil. Translated in Romanian language and published with the title Grafuri si Retele Electrice by the Editura Tehnica, 1994, Bucharest, Romania.

This book stems from the undergraduate and graduate courses taught by the author between 1973 and 1978 at the School of Electrical Engineering of the University of Sao Paulo in Sao Carlos, SP, Brazil. An interesting aspect of the literature that addresses this topic is the fact that, depending upon the theoretical orientation of the author, the graph theory appears to be seen differently by the mathematician, the electrical engineer or the economist. Indeed, the applications of this branch of mathematics, which entered the stage in 1736 when the pioneering Swiss mathematician and physicist Leonhard Euler solved the now famous problem of the seven bridges from Konigsberg, are quite diverse, but the theoretical core is the same. Accordingly, the book starts from the basic concepts, theoretical fundamentals and classical algorithms, and proceeds with a consistently unified discussion of key applications in electrical networks and operations research. The text is primarily geared toward graduate students and professors in electrical engineering, and can be used as a desktop reference by professionals responsible for developing innovative optimization and network connectivity applications.

White Papers

Stability Assessment Requires Much More Than Just Load-Flow Calculations -- According to a relatively widespread belief in the utility industry, it would be possible to assess "voltage stability" with load-flows, continuation load-flows and other tools that allow drawing "PV-Nose Curves" without representing the internal reactances of the generators. As shown in this essay, nothing is further from truth (read more ...)

EPIC is In - Alpha Is Out -- On May 29, 2001, Intel unveiled the Itanium processor - a 64 bit EPIC (Explicit Parallel Instruction Computing) engine that entered the scene to compete directly with the RISC processors in the high-end server and workstation markets. At the same time, in a move reflecting the sluggish Alpha sales, Compaq announced that, effective immediately, it was discontinuing the manufacturing of a chip that, until then, had been the darling of SCADA/EMS system integrators. The considerations developed in this white paper could have been branded at that time as pure speculations, but life has followed exactly the path predicted herein (read more ...)
